Thank you, God, for the generous heart you have placed within humanity.
Though it is sometimes difficult to see generosity in the world, I am reminded that we follow a generous God. In truth, generosity isn’t hard to find, but it is often overshadowed by the world's struggles rather than illuminated. Christ died for us while we were yet sinners—this is the ultimate proof of God’s love for us.
But Your generosity did not begin or end there. Throughout Scripture, You continually revealed Yourself through love—through creating us in Your image, through the prophets, through the stories of Your people, through the Psalms, and most fully through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Yet, even after Christ’s time on earth, the story of Your generous spirit continued. It lived on in the disciples and apostles, and it lives on today through Your faithful people.
This reflection began earlier this week, though gratitude for generosity is always present in my heart. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to donate blood. It amazes me that blood drives happen all across the nation, and people continually show up. Some may feel obligated, but many come simply to help others—to "pass it on." Some come despite previous unpleasant experiences, fear of needles, or the discomfort that sometimes follows donating. Yet, they still show up. Even though we often lean toward selfishness, God has instilled within us a generous heart.
The day before storms swept through the Midwest, a small group within our church family made plans to help the community by clearing fallen tree branches—a reflection of God’s love and generosity in action. Thankfully, this group wasn’t needed because, for the most part, the trees remained standing. But their willingness to serve is generosity at its core.
Perhaps the most profound example of generosity I reflect on is the generosity of the church itself. Churches, as we know them, could not exist without it. The sharing of Christ’s hope and love is made possible through the generosity of Your people. Whether through financial giving, volunteering, programming, or simply attending and supporting the body of Christ, Your generous spirit is alive in Your people. It’s difficult to put into words just how profound this generosity is, but it is evident in every aspect of church life.
These are just a few examples. Where do you see the generosity of Christ made evident through human beings in our world?
Thank You, God, for the ways You continue to work through us, calling us to generosity, love, and faithfulness. May I reflect Your generous spirit in all that I do.
