God, thank you for revealing yourself to us.
Everything in this gratitude journal has at least one thing in common—it is a reminder of how God makes Godself known to us. Yes, it would be easier if God would just say, “Here I am, this is what I am about, this is what you need to do.” However, God has done that in subtle ways, revealing Godself through scripture—especially through the Prophets and Jesus Christ. And yet, as God revealed Godself, people lost their minds and argued, “This can’t be the way.” Even though it leads to more debate and discussion, I appreciate the way God reveals Godself. At the very least, the mystery keeps us stay in awe of the majesty and love of God.
With that being said, as time goes by, it becomes remarkably clear how much God cares for us and how often God tries to get our attention. (Isn’t hindsight great?) The Scriptures—the Bible—are the key to seeing a clearer picture of God revealing Godself. Through scripture, we see God in creation—not just in the beauty of the world, but in the truth that we are created in God’s image. God has spoken through the prophets, through the hands and feet of God’s people, and most fully through Godself in the person of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. But that doesn’t mean God is finished—this is just where we get the clearest picture of God.
God is still revealing Godself. We see God in the scriptures that continue to speak truth. We see God in and through the Holy Spirit, moving in our lives. We see God in creation, in its beauty and wonder. We see God in God’s people, in the ways love, grace, and kindness reflect who God is. We see God in our everyday lives when we choose to open our senses to God’s majesty, love, and care.
(Personally, I have to add this in.) And sometimes, God reveals Godself with a sense of humor. A platypus? Proof that God delights in creativity. Moses and the burning bush? A dramatic way to get someone’s attention. Balaam’s donkey speaking? A reminder that God will use whatever means necessary to make God’s voice heard. Time and again, God shows us that God is not just a God of grandeur and majesty but also one who surprises us, who brings joy, who reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously.
Yes, the Bible is the key to unlocking God’s majesty in our midst. Scripture allows us to see God today—in people created in God’s image, in creation touched by God’s hand, and in those “God-incidences” (a coincidence orchestrated by God). This is why, hopefully, Christians have more hope than the average person—because we can look back through scripture, hear the testimonies of others in the faith, and see that God is at work—even today, and perhaps especially today.
So, thank you, God, for never ceasing to reveal Godself. Help us to recognize you in the everyday moments, in the unexpected, in the humorous, and to respond with gratitude and joy.
Where do you see God at work in your life? Where do you see God at work in the world?
